Wrong Oil in SUV?

Asked by Schuyler Oct 18, 2017 at 09:01 PM about the 2012 Hyundai Tucson

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So I went to an oil change place and they
accidentally put the wrong oil in my car. They put
5w-20 instead of 5w-30. Will this ruin my engine? I
have a 7 hour trip to make as well so will this make
my engine explode?

I would not worry. If you use oil top it off with the weight specified in the owners manual.

I am a certified tech and For one you never put two different weight oils in an engine. In other words you don't mix two different weights. But no it shouldn't hurt anything the first number is how well the oil protects in cold weather the second number is how well it protects in hot weather you want your first number to be fairly low and your second number to be fairly High but like the first guy said in the winter time as cool as it is out right now you shouldn't have any problem at al

I have been mixing grades of oils for decades and a million or more miles and have never had even the faintest hint of oil related failure on engines with 200,000+ miles on them.

Would it be ok to use 0w30 instead of 5w30 in cooler weather in Canada ?

pretty much every answer here is wrong in one way or another..... you put in the oil that the manufacturer recommends.... you dont substitute 0w20 for 5w20... and you don't substitute 5w20 for 5w30..... read your owners manual, it may say to use one weight for summer and a different one for winter if you live in a climate where there are hi and low temp extremes, you more than likely can and should use the same oil year round... I live in new england, summer temps regularly reach high 80s and 90s F, and winter goes down to zreo and well below... between me, wife and kids, we've had 10 or more 2000 and newer vehicles over past 20 years, none of them ever needed different weight oils from winter to summer according to the manufacturers of each.. some were 10W30, most were 5W30, and all of them since 2010 all took either 5W20 or 0W20... if the manufacturer calls for that weight, all those oils will work perfectly well between below 0 F - 100F
