Honda Accord Windows Opening When Car is Locked
Asked by spaherman Jan 25, 2014 at 04:30 PM about the 2012 Honda Accord
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I have come back to my 2012 Honda Accord several times to find the window partially
opened. It's usually all four windows, although once it was just one window. I have been
triple checking to make sure they are closed completely when I lock the car so I know it's
not just an oversight. Is this an electric problem? Window problem? Lock problem?

Upper end models have this option. If you hold the the unlock button on remote all the windows will roll down.
Some cars and I believe yours is one of them if you push and hold either the lock or unlock button on the key fob ( not sure which one) it will cause the windows to go down. Some users reporting that they have similar issue caused by the fob being pressed while in thier pocket causing the windows to go down.

I experienced the same problem today. I locked my Honda Accord 2015 and pressed the lock button on the remote for about 3 seconds from about 10 feet away. When I returned several hours later I found all windows including the sunroof half open. I want to eliminate this option. What I would to do something like that. Please advised. Thanks
Yes just tried it on my 2012 accord. Press the unlock once to unlock driver door and twice to unlock all doors, but if you continue to hold it down the windows will open and also the sunroof. Is this normal or a problem with the main computer? Question is how to turn it off? My wife accidentally did this today while shopping.

My 2013 Honda Accord just started doing this. My wife is Colorado Springs, CO and has both fobs. She is afraid of locking herself out of the car, as she has in the past. We live in Noblesville, IN and that is where the car is parked at this moment. There is no way that my wife could be pressing the unlock button twice and have the windows roll down. I just do not believe the signal strength would be strong enough to reach from Colorado. Penske Honda told me they would look at it in 2 wks.
I have a '13 accord and just found windows and moon roof fully open. Car has been parked 3 days. I have tried to replicate the button pushing scenarios and that does not open everything up. Going to call Honda directly as my service advisor locally is obviously clueless.

I drive a Honda Civic 2016. I had the same thing happen to my today. I never pressed my buttons though. I always keep my keys in a purse pocket sperate from everything else. But when I hold the unlock button down the third time everything opens but not all the way...and that's how I found my car! I am nervous it will do this again!
2016 Civic. I have had the same problem twice finding the windows down when returning to the car. The Honda dealership and then Honda Customer Service said there is no way to disable this feature. Customer service said it must be something I accidentally did while the keys were in my pocket. Their solution: Don't put key in pocket. I should hang them on my belt! Really? I tried to point out how unlikely it would be to accidentally press the door unlock button in the correct three step sequence needed to open the windows on two separate occasions.
Thanks! This was worrying me making me think I had an electrical problem. Glad it's just something stupid :)
Reading all these posts makes me happy (that I'm not the only one) and angry. Why doesn't Honda eliminate this feature?? It has happened to my '16 Accord multiple times already. Last summer I returned from a week-long trip (without car) to discover all windows and the moon roof were open! Amazingly, it hadn't rained and nothing was taken.
I wasn't so lucky. car was flooded. Honda Accord is a lemon now. Will never buy this car again.
2016 Honda Civic, my wife locked her Car Christmas Eve morning left her keys in her jacket, she was busy with holiday cooking, I went out in the evening to grab an item out of my truck everything was covered in ice, her windows were up, she went out late that evening to find all the windows half open Car soaked with ice and rain, what’s the deal no one had touched her key fob, could the signal from my fob signaled her car ?. This isn’t an uncommon issue, my ford key fob has set off multiple alarms in parking lots and not to mention lock and unlock my grandparents 2006 mercury
We live in Florida and me and,my wife was in Georgia and her windows rolled down and the keys were no where near the car this has happen 7 times now.
I have a 2015 Accord, Windows, sunroof, and trunk randomly open--big problem. This has happened multiple times, dealer insists it is the FOB. No way is this a FOB problem. Mine has been in house with nothing near it and way out of range for fob. Has anyone been successful in getting it fixed or pursuing it with Honda ?
It's been raining all week. We went out to eat and when we came out, all of the windows and sunroof were completely open. EVERYTHING was soaked. Makes me want to get a Toyota and get rid of this mess.
This happened on my 2006 Honda Accord. We were at a restaurant and the key was in my husbands back pocket, sitting on it. He must have hit the unlock on the fob and kept sitting on the unlock. When we came out all the windows were down and all the doors were unlocked. We thought the car was possessed! Warning don't have key in back pocket.
Having the windows open by themselves is a big mystery but it is not your doing. It is not your own FOB. It is a serious defect with Honda's and maybe other makes. The frequency initiated to lower the windows and open the roof is coming from most likely another persons FOB. Honda denies any wrong doing and thinks that this is impossible, and still puts the blame solely on the Honda customer and their own FOB. Not the case. Honda needs a total recall on their cars as this window feature is not simple to turn off. Maybe a nice feature in Florida, when your car is very hot inside before you step in, but not in the cold and rain. How many other people have had their cars flooded out in a rain storm because of this uncontrolled window drop? From what I've read, lots. How much has the value of your car dropped with one flood of rain? You'll never know until the; rust, mold, mildew and smell starts up. You better trade it in now.
Just got home, shut the car off, it was snowing pretty good. I get in the house and looked outside and noticed all the windows are down and the sunroof open, nice! Thought someone was playing a joke?
We are all still waiting for an explanation to how this could happen. The signal is definitely not coming from accidentally pressing the Honda's own FOB. This is no joke, especially when your Honda gets completely soaked with rain and or snow. It has only happened the once to us, but one soaking is one too many. We can't trust leaving the Honda outside with any valuables inside it or if the weather looks bad. It is such a headache to own such a car. We'll never buy another Honda until they do a recall and figure our what is going on. We are now stuck with this Civic. Cute car otherwise, but so is a rattle snake, until it bites you.
I just had the exact problem. My outdoor cam caught it too. The car opens the windows and the sunroof all by itself. I just found it by chance.
I have a 2019 Honda Accord this has occurred twice 3/18 and today 4/3 . I called Honda they talk to me like I’m nuts . These windows should not come down randomly on their own . My back windows won’t come back up . I have to wait a bit then try . This is a brand new car

Stupid people, an owners manual is meant to be read. Find out about your car. This is actually a high end option and people that understand this appreciate it and don’t have their key fobs being tossed about and buttons pressed freely. If the unlock button is being pressed, someone could open the door the same way because it has to be unlocked first smh
Hate this feature and it does not make me feel better to be called stupid. I want this eliminated or else!! PNJ
Honda told me I'm stupid that this can't happen. I guess I am stupid for buying a Honda in the first place.
take the moon roof fuse out
I just found my 2018 accord with all 4 windows down and sunroof open. I was asleep and the fob was definitely not being pressed. My car has had other electrical issues too and when I complain to Honda they tell me unless they see it happen they don’t know what I’m talking about and can’t pinpoint the problem! If this had happened while I was out somewhere and things had been stolen out of my car I’d be furious!!!

I just found my windows 3/4 down and sunroof completely open in my 2019 Honda Acord Hybrid yesterday. The keys were on top of the refrigerator and not in anyone's pocket. I checked the car manual and there was no information in there to address this issue. We read online sites and note that this has been an issue for 10+ years. We went to the dealer in town today and were informed this is the 'best kept Honda feature'. Hmmm not when it is damaging the interior of cars due to exposure to the elements. If it was a 'feature' that Honda created on purpose, why isn't there mention of it in the manual and the 'feature' covered by the warranty. My guess is it is not a properly functioning feature and Honda doesn't want to add info to its manual because then it would have to cover it under its warranty vs. passing on this damage to the consumer and auto insurance industry by expecting them to pick up this cost under comprehensive. I was disappointed to learn that the feature cannot be disconnected. I was disappointed to learn the sunroof fuse cannot be disconnected (I was hoping to at least mitigate any future damage). I was glad that the staff at the Honda Dealer said they have heard of this issue often and they don't know why Honda doesn't put it in the manual so people know how to property perform this function when they want and avoid it when they don't. But Honda needs to perfect this 'special feature' so that it doesn't happen when the car owner isn't touching the key controls. But until the car insurance industry stops paying for these losses and put pressure on Honda to correct/improve their 'feature' and properly inform customers in the manual and cover via warranty my guess is Honda won't bother to fix.
I am shocked and disappointed in the Honda company for allowing this bizarre occurrence to go on for so many years I have been a loyal Toyota customer for 25 years. I switched to the Accord on 2017 this has happened to me twice and it is not acceptable. I love my car, but this is a deal breaker. I will never purchase a Honda again unless they do a recall and remove the feature.
so what's the solution?
This morning I got up to find all 4 windows of my 2015 Honda Civic all half way open. The leaf pickup truck had come around and all that dust got in my car plus it had been raining for about 15 mins. Nice mess. I looked in the manual and could find nothing about opening all the windows at the same time. Of course when I told my grown children they all thought I was crazy so this has been very helpful. It has happened before but I thought I must have done something wrong.
We had heavy rain whole last night, in the morning we found trunk, all windows and sunroof was open and interior was flooded with rain water. I am quite sure this happened due to a malefaction in vehicle system. I contacted local Honda dealer and they advised me to contact Honda customer service. They are close today and tomorrow. I will call them on Monday to report the issue.
This is happening to my son’s 2018 Honda Accord and it has rained in it twice so far. His gun was left inside while he was shopping and he cane out to find it like this again this past week. Thank God no one stole anything. He is ready to trade it in.
I guess the only solution is to get rid of the car and stop buying any Honda cars!!!
Mine is also Honda Accord 2018, flooded last Saturday, seats are still wet, seats heating also not working.
Mine just did this today, WTF???? I went to work and when I came back, thankfully just four hours later, my windows were all half down, sun roof semi open, and all doors unlocked! I’ve got a Honda Accord 2009. Smh, this is freaking scary, how do I avoid this happening? I wasn’t even near my car!

I have experienced this 'undocumented feature' on my Honda Civic 2019 model this rainy morning in Chicago. Who in their right mind would even engineer this completely useless and security nightmare functionality? And no easy ability to turn if off? Who would want to roll their windows all at once? Not me. Not in sub-zero or over 100 degree temperatures, or when it snows or rains. Let the drivers think for themselves. Spare us of these idiotic features.

Just had this happen today and was rather freaked out by it... worried that someone had broken in, but found it odd that all 4 windows were down the same distance AND sunroof open as well. Googled this oddity and BOOM... here we are... replicated the issue by hold down on the unlock button and half jumped out of my skin, startled that this glitches actually worked... lol...
Happened to my 2018 Honda Accord yesterday. Thankfully we discovered it within an hour. I thought someone had broken in the car. Very unhappy about this. Seriously considering selling before it happens again and I have to deal with insurance. What a hassle!
I believe it's meant to be a handy feature to cool your car from the hot sun heat buildup prior to driving. Quick and handy from your house or when approaching vehicle. Shouldn't happen on its own of course.
This just happened to me today. All 4 windows were about an inch down and trunk was open.
This just happened to me today. I have a 2019 Honda Clarity. Strange thing is my car was locked and all of the windows were about 95% down, not all the way, but pretty close. Bizarre.
The windows can apparently all be rolled down using the key. The key being the emergency key that you do not normally use. However this does create the possibility that a problem with the door lock switch that detects the key turn, or the wiring to the switch could be causing the problem.
GuruFW6H6 My Clarity does not have a physical key or an emergency key - just the fob. There are no keyholes in the doors, so I don't think that is happening with mine. I did try the three presses on the unlock button followed by holding it down for a couple of seconds and the windows all opened.
I believe that this issue with my 2019 is an electronic issue, but I cannot get the Honda Service dept to even investigate the issue - they are too busy telling me that I am accidently pressing the correct combination to make the windows come down. And that it is a SAFETY feature and cannot be deactivated. Honda Automotive (national) says this is a FEATURE but not a Safety feature. Unless I can get this feature de-activated, I will NEVER have another HONDA again!!! Totally unacceptable!!!
Happened to me once. I'm aware of the fob option to press and hold unlock to cool down a car before getting in on a hot day All I can say is that since then I've programmed the doors to automatically lock when I step away and it's never happened again. Coincidence?

How did you program the doors to lock when you stepped away?

My Honda accord 2015 has randomly opened the windows, sunroof, trunk multiple times since i bought it. Have given it to service 6 times with no resolution of problems. Techs can not find any problems on diagnostic tests. The key fob is not the problem !!!! definitely not the problem. I have the fob on my dresser at night nothing touching it and this problem happens often. Honda refuses to fix problem or replace car I opened case with Honda America, but they stonewall me at the receptionist and caseworker level, refuse to let me talk to supervisor or manager Anyone willing to give me their cases and share info ???

I have a 2013 Accord and this has been a problem since the first year. The dealer dismissed this as a problem and blame it on pressing the key while in the pocket. I experience this issue more with the trunk opening, although it happened with windows and sunroof as well. This’s my first and last Honda because of this problem and the refusalof the company to acknowledge it.
My 17 Honda Accord has had this happen a couple of times since I bought it The most recent was last night while I was at a hotel in Clearwater Beach Of course is started raining late at night and my interior was soaked Luckily noone took my golf clubs out if my trunk Any suggestions on the cure?

This just happened to me yesterday. I had returned from the store and left my 2019 Pilot unlocked in the driveway as I needed to run an errand a little later. When I went outside, I saw that all 4 windows and moonroof were halfway open. I had not touched the key fob because I had purposely left the car unlocked. After getting in the car and closing everything, I drove off. About halfway to my destination, I heard a loud gush of air and realized that the moon roof had opened by itself part way. That is NOT a feature. That did not happen by a key fob which was in the cup holder. We are calling the dealer today to see if we can get rid of the car through the Lemon Law. We bought it as a used car 2 weeks ago at a Toyota dealership.
No answer, my 2018 Honda Accord has the same issue as many above. I came out in the morning and found ALL four windowa open and the sunroof open. I was lucky it was not a rainy day! This is the second time that all windows and sunroof were open. My FOB was in a key cabinet in my office, about 40 feet from the car.
To: 08Accord6Spd (smh) You are the Stupid one! And/or you work for, or are paid off by, Honda! Whether it's in the manual OR NOT - This is a "high end" feature? It is not very high end, & you must be high! In the manual? Then why do all of the Honda service people lack any credible response? There's no reason to open windows & roof & TRUNK(?) in this manner, especially if you have their expensive remote starter!!!! It also locks the doors (without fob being in pockets)! Furthermore, it not only opened all windows and moon roof, but it locked them open! Read the comments Fool! It happens when the fob is not in pockets! It happens when the car is in a different state than the fob! Rjhearn384 = My FOB was in a key cabinet in my office, about 40 feet from the car. VeryConcerned3 = The keys were on top of the refrigerator and not in anyone's pocket. Very high end - NOT! Moron - How much were you paid off to call everyone else stupid?

Adding to this thread. 2013 Honda Accord, my son's car. Randomly did it last night, everything soaked after a rain overnight. Still no solution, Honda???

I’ll never buy Honda again. This window thing happened to me for the first time with my 2019 Passport. It’s disheartening to read about people being blown off when they have a legitimate concern like this and bring it up to their dealership to no avail.
This just started happening a few weeks ago on our 2017 Honda CRV. The last time was at 5:30am in our driveway after a snowstorm. The FOB was inside the house on a table with no one touching it. All of the windows and the sunroof opened and the snow on the windows and sunroof fell into the car (see photo). Honda told us they couldn't find a problem and left it indoors in the service department for 3 days and it didn't happen while there. They said if they can't find the problem, the diagnosis wouldn't be covered by our extended warrantee and it would cost us around $160. They said if it happens again to have the car towed to them without restarting it because that would reset whatever was causing it.
