Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My car has been sitting for some years.  I want to crank it up.  But, I would like
to hand turn the engine first.  Do I have to take off starter motor and plugs?
Also can I turn it clockwise?

Pull out all the spark plugs, makes it a lot easer to turn, no need to take anything else off, good idea to squirt any type of trany fluid in the cylinders, find a socket that fits the crankshaft bolt (middle bottom pulley) and yes turn clockwise slowly. If the rings are stuck to the cylinder walls, the trany fluid will work them loose by initially working the crank back and forth if stuck. Then get a couple of revolutions at least on the crank, by hand.

also if the plugs are out you can even try and put a socket and breaker bar on the front alt pully and the belt should turn the engine around.as its easy to get to.

there is also a tool to use on the flexplate/flywheel

You can remove the fan belt, that will help with the ease of rotation, Remove top part of the shroud for ease of access to the crank bolt..
