you do it when its cold so you dont burn your self and its not accurate when its hot and the motor shakes when it runs so all the oil moves around and creates a non-accurate reading

i just got a 1996 f150 with 143000 miles on it. it has not been serviced regularly. the old owner used 15W40 in it. it is a gas motor. i want to change it to 10W30 to help starting on cold mornings....
