Is this dealer trying to have me buy extra unneeded service.

Asked by GuruFT4V9 Apr 18, 2020 at 02:14 PM about the 2013 Toyota Prius v

Question type: General

I just had my 2013 Prius V in the dealer for an oil change at 90,000 miles.
They said I needed to have the transmission serviced for $240, Engine
Coolant flush for $190. Hybrid Coolant at $150, and Hybrid Cooling Fan
service for $280. I don's see any of these in the owners manual and think
the dealer is just trying to do unnecessary work.  I have a very good feeling
that the service writers get bonuses based on up-selling unneeded service.

Use your judgement! An independent shop can do these services for less.

I agree, many service writers and technicians get a commission on jobs they sell. I wouldn't service the transmission or flush the cooling system. Doing so can open up a can of worms. Many times with an older model you flush the transmission and the transmission stops working or stops working correctly. Same with the cooling system. You flush the cooling system and soon after something is leaking! Unless you're having issues, leave them alone and save your money! If it works, don't fix it! Hope that helps! Jim

I personally would have the transmission serviced and the coolant changed if they were never changed. The hybrid coolant and fan are something I would question.
