will a transmission from a 2005 jeep liberty fit a 2006 jeep liberty?

According to the vin both were made in the same factory
and have the same engine and are the same base model.
The only numbers on the transmission that I can see are
992 AB over an E ...that's on both transmissions.

If both vehicles have the same engine and the transmissions have the same codes or model number on it, I would say you can, but don't take my word for it. The base models were the sport trim and came standard with a 5 speed manual. But if you want to be absolutely sure, I'd contact a trans shop.
