Good safe car for girl going to college

I'm looking to upgrade my daughter's car before
she goes to college. Would like to stay in a front
wheel drive sedan. Does anyone have any thoughts
on what car would be best for her? I don't want to
spend more than $15,000 if possible.

I would recommend 2013 or newer Hyundai Elantra...can get for under $15000 with 50,000 miles or less (bought mine w/35,000m for 13,000 this year). 5yr bumper to bumper 10yr powertrain warranty. Best warranty out there, 6 airbags standard. Nice running, I avg 32MPG between city and highway driving. Great looking car as well.
A new Focus is stupidly-cheap option right now; Ford has some crazy incentives on 2017 models. Try to avoid the automatic models though, as they are known to shift roughly.
The safest car is a reliable car. Skip the Korean stuff and do what Tom suggests.
Look for a 5 star rated car and then eliminate the un-reliable cars. http://www.iihs.org/iihs/ratings/TSP-List
