Trailer hitch solution to gas tank recall

Asked by Anthony Jan 23, 2017 at 11:33 AM about the 2003 Jeep Liberty

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Our 03 Jeep Liberty had a dealer installed trailer
hitch to satisfy the recall about the gas tank
protection. The service manager said it is not for
towing even though it appears to be heavy duty. No
wiring was installed. Can this be used for towing?
Also, if not, when the next owner wants to use it for
towing, how would they know it's not for towing?

I was told it is not for towing. Now I have need to put a power chair rack on there and wonder if it will hold the 400 pounds rack and chair are.

If Kieth above can tow a 12x6 trailer then I see no reason you can’t put a wheel chair attachment on it. There wasn’t a recall on the gas tank but Jeep put the hitch on to “protect “ the tank in case of rear collision. It was a Jeep directive recall on this . When I get a chance I’ll check to see if they used the correct bolts to secure this. A certain grade bolts are supposed to be used for towing safety.
