Trickle charger for Fors C Max Energi

Asked by Denise May 18, 2022 at 11:50 PM about the 2014 Ford C-Max Energi

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My car will be un driven for 8 weeks. I understand it’s optimal to maintain the
car by using a trickle charger for the non-lithium battery. Is this correct? And, if
so, what’s the best trickle charger to use and also what’s the optimum way to
attach it?

Check your owner's manual or talk to your local Ford Dealer. You might be able to just disconnect the negative battery cable for the 8 weeks and it'll be fine. However, some newer vehicles require the computers have power at all times. If not they need to be reprogrammed. If that's the case you want a battery tender or battery maintainer that will automatically switch on and off as needed over the 8 week period. A trickle charger that's constantly changing the battery will ruin the battery by overcharging it. Plus you could have a safety issue. Batteries that are overcharged emit hydrogen gas that's explosive under the right conditions! So a battery tender is the way to go. You can hook up your battery tender, if needed, directly to the battery. Hope that helps! Jim

I have used battery maintainer for years to maintain my 12 volt batteries in my tractors and pickup that I don't use in the winter. I use the maintainers with an output of 500 ma to 1 amp. They cost less that $10. I've had batteries last 9 years. For my pickup I cut the clamps off a maintainer and wired on a cigarette lighter adapter and I just plug it in to the cigarette lighter or auxiliary power outlet. Never had a problem.
