Engine too hot

I just replaced my air filters both in my 2014 Chevrolet Malibu. However my
temperature gauge still roams over to hot. The notification pops up and says
Shut engine off too hot. What could this be

Could be the thermostats but first check to see if fans are coming on if they are radiator maybe clogged with dirt and bugs causing little to almost no air flow across the coils clean coils with garden hose and nozzle if A.C condenser coil sets in front radiator clean it also so that you can get good air flow to radiator.

Yes the fan comes on sometimes, when I turn the car off my fan is going. Thank You for the advice I will try cleaning the coils first before replacing thermostats.
