naaa if it were the BALLAST RESISTOR .... it wouldn't start at all ... that's the white porcelain rectangle thing ... the other thing is the ignition box .. NAPA used to sell a replacement ... P/N - TP 50 I think is the number it's been awhile so.... Oh yea they put the electronic ignition box on the firewall so it would stay DRY ... WET is worse than hot ... Hot +ign box = DRY ..... you could put a heat sink on it . PB

Ok, when it dies look down the carb air horn and work the throttle does it squirt fuel from the accelerator pump into the venturis ? .. if it does it's the ignition system ... if not it's fuel system and it might be water in the gas tank clogging the sock filter in the tank ... if ya ain't got any squirt at the carb after it dies you may get by with dumping a couple of bottles of HEAT in the gas tank .. also check at the fuel tank sending unit ( where the fuel line comes out of the tank ) there will be a short piece of rubber hose between the sending unit and the fuel line to the motor ... make sure it is not cracked or split (vacuum leak ) will break siphon of fuel from pump to tank.. check entire fuel line from tank sending unit to fuel pump for kinks or rusted pin holes . Any wet spots along the line would indicate a leak which on the suction side of the line will leak air into the line breaking the siphon of fuel from the tank to the pump... OK ? you said you checked the filter ? did you replace it ? otherwise you got to blow through it with low pressure (mouth ) Most people wont put a used fuel filter in their mouth and blow on it to see if it's clogged. did you ? . just buy a new one and let me know how you worked out .. One more tidbit , if it's that old and has never been overhauled the timing chain could be goin bad .. small block mopars have a ten inch cam to crank center to center distance so the timing chain compared to other motors is kinda long , when the chain stretches some it can jump teeth on the sprockets throwing the cam and ignition timing way off which would also make it run like you described ... could also be a cracked distributor cap or a worn out distributor reluctor or magnetic pickup coil . air gap on that is .008 to .010 thousands of an inch ( must use brass feeler gauge for correct feel ) how's that ROY ?

I also replaced the ignition module at fifteen years old...noticed the unit was "encapsulated" with a dow-corning clear insulation that made the electronics immobile and un-servicable~ first ever experience with "potted" electronics~

yah, sounds like you may have done this once or twice, Peter....old school...an old guy...yah man~ that '73 Fury III had an oil leak and the sister did not put any oil in there and the oil light went a flickerin' and the new owner put a new timing chain in that....divorced...disappeared from our world~ I was thinkin' heat-riser and butterfly choke as well...note operation...note that it's causing a rich condition...why else would it come back after waitin' a spell?~

that's true if it's cold out or damp the carb could be icing up and cutting off the air . but after it warms a bit the ice won't come back ... and it should stay running .. either way the rest of the story now must be told by the power wagon owner 'cause we have done ALL we can ... YES ?

Bein' stuck at home with MS isn't something I'd recommend to anyone...it isn't that I can't do anything....it's just they won't let me~ sold my bicycle...no old cars to fix (wife has me in a MINI)....no one to play chess or some Jazz with...miserable musically...Clearlake is a musical desert~

short of gettin' in there and checkin' it out personally...we must look at the basics, air, fuel, spark, timing...cam timing....we seem to have air and spark, timing and valve timing....the fuel is the only sticking point....much easier when the IAT sensor does all the heavy lifting with it's compatriot the Block temp sensor knows how to enrichen the mix...this old time hardware can be a fuss~

Who will ever forget the heat riser off the manifold with the B9 control robot arm duct into a thermal box that would open up to bring fresh air into the intake plenum only to meet a thermal heat-riser choke that would spin the butterfly valve closed combined with a "high-idle" on the carb link that should release when the engine comes up to temp....at least it is not like the old days when you've got two pullout levers like me '53 Chevy truck did, throttle and choke...six volt electrical...starter solenoid was your foot pressin on a piece of steel that would act like a solenoid~

Check out the contacts and wires at the ignition module plug itself. Have someone wiggle the plug while cranking.........
