Do you really wait until the water is hot enough to turn on the heater? If you want to be sure it is warm enough, six to eight blocks should warm it up enough.

Not sure where you live but maybe a little cool/cold air before the heat comes is not good. If every thing is working right and you only need to wait for heat, about a half a mile should start giving you warm air. If you only want hot (75-80) it will probably take a good mile.
