Any ideas on why RPM need would bounce and check engine light come on for a few seconds?
Asked by adierks3 Jun 04, 2013 at 07:31 AM about the 2005 Kia Optima
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
RPM needle drops down to 0, bounces and then goes back to normal while going 50-70mph. When the needle goes back, the check engine light comes and then turns off a couple seconds later. I can feel a slight change when light comes on and off, like I pulled my foot off gas for a split second.
Took it to a mechanic and when he ran the check engine light codes there was nothing registered. Took it to him while check engine light was on and he said it was a misfire in cylinder 1 and 2. Replaced the throttle position sensor (tps), coils, spark plugs and plug wires. Got the car back today and it is still doing it.
Please help!!! This has been going on for a few months now and still no answers. Thank you!

i had the exact same problem today, mine is a 2003 optima with 140k miles on it
We finally got it fixed and it was a faulty ignition sensor. Hope that helps your KIA! Good luck. It was the oddest thing that it never saved on the check engine light codes, but after over a month of it acting up my mechanic figured it out. Runs great again now.

hello adierks3- would that be the same as ignition failure sensor?
Yes that was it, sorry.

Had loss of power for a short time and engine light came on. Went away, then came back. Tachometer had intermittent operation. Instead of going through the troubleshooting steps of measuring opens/shorts, etc., replaced ignition failure sensor. $92. Check engine light not on anymore and car seems to run fine. Tachometer behaving well again.

My 2013 optima is doing it now, but no check engine light came on. Took it back the the dealership where I got it from and they don't know what's wrong with it. They had my car for 4 days and could not figure out what was wrong with my car. Then taday it happened again. I have to take it in on Monday to see why this keep happening.
I’m having the same problem... I have to completely pull over and restart.. it is clearly a safety issue.. it seems as though, the dealership is trying to charge me the diagnosis and try to tell me that it’s out of warranty.. of all the times I reported this... only hrs before my appt they tell me it’s out of warranty..
2015 Kia Forte, 97k miles, similar problem. My tachometer needle bounces all over the place, even with the heat/ac off. Haven't tried turning off Eco mode yet. Stalls out frequently when driving at slow speeds, especially during a slow turn or when coming to a stop or after accelerating from a complete stop. No check engine light at all though except when it normally comes on during initial ignition. I use the car for a long commute as well as ridesharing on the side, so if anyone has some clues where to start I'd love to hear them.
