The compass system is designed to operate for a certain number of miles or degrees of turn before needing a signal from the GPS satellites. When the compass display shows CAL, drive the vehicle for a short distance in an open area where it can receive a GPS signal. The compass system will automatically determine when the GPS signal is restored and provide a heading again.

Cal means you are in California. Get the heck out of there fast.

Calculating? My Gamin says that when it's trying to capture the direction.

Better answer than I got after having my car serviced @ my local Chevy store. They said it was not a problem. Have driven this vehicle over 130k w/many rotations & loft with nothing like this happening, not sure but from now going to ask for a specific tech because the one who worked on it today won't be working on it again. I have GM service experience from working in dealerships so I'm not w/o some knowledge of car operation.
