the gasket from your front pipe to manifold are known for deteriorating causing that issue it should sound a little louder when revved up

Anytime you smell exhaust fumes in your car (and they are not coming from another vehicle in proximity) you should put the car on a lift and have it checked by a competent mechanic. Breathing exhaust gas is nothing to mess with and could make you pass out while driving.
