im hving same problem! bad thing to not be able to leave rear door open....whats the point of the hatchback then? poor design, i say....and the blind spots on the soul (a 2015) are gonna make me trade this soul in, as soon as feasable.

I used a very thin screwdriver popped off the cover disconnected the power from the lightbulb and used black duck tape and taped wire down, fyi the light itself was already Very Hot and it hadn’t been open for that long, of course the tailgate light is now on the dash Lol

Just use a carabiner to click in the latch (in the door) and the light will automatically turn off.
