sounds like your sending unit is bad ,yes the tank will have to be droped.

Most likely the sending unit, however swapping in a different fuel gauge may be easiest, next step to troubleshoot.

where is sending unit and how would gauge be the prob where is the ground so i can check iy
sending unit is in gas tank, ground wire is on top of gas tank,it has to be droped to fix it,if you have never droped a tank DONT try this,it is a very dangrous job.i doubt it is a ground problem, and NO on the gauge, leave that alone, just take it to a mechanic you trust and have him do the job, with a new sending unit it comes with a new float and fuel pump, sock filter.
