I believe there's a transponder in the column that works with the key chip and ECM , it'll most likely have to be programed at the dealer if you swap them . So that's something to look forward to . Your experience may differ .
I think what your referring to is the passlock or anti theft system and if so, I think your right.. I might know how to reprogram or relearn the new key but I was curious if there was any differences between the two columns... and do u think I would have to change anything else if I end up changing the passlock with the one from the replacement column?.. like would that affect my ECM at all or would I just have to have it reprogrammed with the new column, passlock, ignition, and key?
Reprogramming the Passkey system is something you can not do yourself without the proper scan tool. Pay no attention to the magical relearn procedures that everyone talks about as they will not work in this situation! That procedure is for a very specific repair to the vehicle security system! Your local junkyard or auto parts store should be able to tell you if the two columns will interchange. I don't think they will but I could be wrong. The airbag system (SRS) is another consideration. Hope that helps! Jim
Just spoke to someone working for GM and he said a steering column anywhere from a 98 to 2005 should work as a replacement but I would likely have to have it flashed or reprogrammed if I replacement the passlock with the steering column, thnx guys
