Ignition coil problem or something else?
Asked by DLebel Sep 30, 2018 at 03:34 PM about the 2017 Hyundai Elantra
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
Experiencing a few problems with my 'Elantra and don't know if they're related. The first is with the Apple Car Play. It used to read the texts automatically now I have to tap the banner to read message and it frequently doesn't work at all. I then started to have problems with the USB connection cutting out and couldn't use the Car Play at all. At 20,500 miles, I experienced the car idling rough while in park and sounding like it wanted to die out. It happened a couple more times in Park and while decelerating for a stoplight. I took to dealer and they replaced an ignition coil. A couple days later the Car Play started cutting out again and had the same stuttering problem. The dealer replaced another ignition coil and said they would order a new entertainment unit. I've had it back about a week and noticed it runs a little louder than it used to and the gas mileage has decreased significantly. The Car Play is still working but I did experience a slight rough idle while in Park. I don't want to have the entertainment unit replaced unecessarily so I am driving a little more to see if any issues return and to monitor the gas mileage a little more. I bought this car brand new and have it serviced at the dealer according to Hyandai's requirements. Could something else be causing the ignition coils to fail and why would they fail at 20,000 miles? Is the Car Play related or a seperate issue?

I’m having issue with ignition coil on my 2017 Elantra too and only have 9200 miles. Apparently the ignition coil is on back order and will take a month so have a loaner. Rep told me they’re looking for diff manufacturers
Just had two replaced..within a month!! I only have 10,444 on mine..nothing is made like it was...
2017 Elantra and i got a bad ignition coil, only 17,856 miles on it, even the service guy was surprised. It seems like this is a common issue?
I been to the dealer 4 time's because of the coils at 30,000 miles
I’ve been to dealer total of 4 times also. They finally replaced all 4 and new entertainment unit. No major shuttering issues but the car makes rattling noises and runs rough now. The CarPlay still cuts out or screen turns totally black. I’m afraid this could affect the resale value or occur after the warranty is up.
Same issue. I had the 2nd cyclinder fail ignition coil around 45000km and now anther coil failed at 71000km. This must be a common failure.

Check engine light just came on again yesterday...took it to AutoZone and they told me it was the ignition coil again. This will the 2nd time to have it fixed on my 2018. I have about 32,000 miles.
Just had all 4 coils replaced by dealership. 2017 Elantra; 45,000 miles. Seems like Hyundai vehicles have a ton of issues with ignition coils. It's nice to have a great warranty but annoying to have to keep using it. My Apple CarPlay acts like that from time to time. I just had the car's computer updated while it was at the dealership so maybe that will resolve it.
I have a 2017 Elantra Sport w/ 80k miles. My CEL came on the other day, like some others, I had the code checked at AutoZone. The current code was P0301, ignition coil. There were other stored codes showing misfires on the other 3 cylinders, but they didn't think they were current. See what the dealer says about it Monday.
Geez, 2017 Elantra owner here as well. I am having the shaking of the engine as well. Dropping it off to Win Hyundai in Carson later today to have them check it out. I smell a recall coming very soon
Update from my previous post. Ignition coils were fine, rather had all 4 spark plugs replaced. The service advisor mentioned there was "heavy gas" in my tank and that could have had something to do with it. Regular powertrain warranty didn't cover it, but extended warranty I bought with the car covered the repairs.
I have a 2017 hyundai Elantra and bought it used with 43,000 miles. I got a code of p00301 and P0302, took it to the dealer and they replaced both coil packs under warranty. Now I have the same issue going on with cylider 4, but the dealer stated that since It is not under warranty any longer, it's up to me to fix the problem. I asked them to replace the other 2 coil packs, but they told me that they couldn't because it wasn't showing up as a problem and Hyundai would not reimburse them the cost for parts if they did. If you bought a used Hyundai, and are the second owner, hyundai only covers the first 5 years or 60,000 which ever comes first.
Just got my ‘18 back yesterday. Turned it on Thursday night, and it violently shook and check engine light came on. Turned off, back on, worked fine, but light still on. Faulty ignition coil. Car has 12,884 miles on it, and now I’m afraid they’re going to keep going out.
This is now 5th time my car is going in for faulty ignition coils. I’m told Hyandai has gone through several different coils and differentiate them by color. 3 of the blue colored coils are bad and the grey is fine in my car. My car first had this issue at 20k miles, now I’m at 32k. I’m tired of messing with this and believe my vehicles qualifies as a “lemon” according to CA law. I made a claim with Hyandai because the dealer can’t do anything about it. We’ll see what happens.
I’ve had 2 coils replaced and now I need another one. I thought I was the only one having this issue with my 2017 Elantra. I bought it brand new but I’ve a lot of driving (139k miles) so I thought this was why
Update. I contacted Hyundai corporate and they have given me a quote to buy back my car. It qualifies as a lemon under CA law because the same issue has been repaired at least 4 times. The dealer will not advise you of this because they are getting reimbursed from Hyundai to make these repairs. Look up the law in your state and know your rights. Even if you’re warranty has expired you should still qualify and be reimbursed your out of pocket repairs. Good luck!
i have a 2017 elantra limited, 2 days ago in the morning I can't start the car, i already replaced a new AGM battery 2 weeks ago, so i'm sure it's not battery, then in the morning i can't start, i will crank but won't start, i suspect either fuel delivery or ignition, so tow it to dealer, and dealer try to jump start it, and finally they said they replaced coil pack, not sure how many because service tech refuse to give me a invoice, it's 12/31, don't want to argue and they close early, so i leave and hopefully it works.

It's obvious the 2017+ models have faulty ignition coils. Too many complaints regarding the same symptoms and resolution. I had a brief discussion with an owner of a 2019 SE and he had to have an ignition coil replaced. I have a 2018 Elantra SEL. Bought it new in Dec. 2018 with 380 miles. Currently at just over 12k miles. From the first week of ownership, the car has exhibited several symptoms. Hard starts. Engine shakes excessively until it idles down. Stumbling. Hesitation and lack of power. Rattling noise. If I try to drive in Eco mode, the engine feels bogged down and vibrates kinda harshly. The CEL has never come on. I've been to the dealership 3x hoping they'd resolve these symptoms. They either tell me nothing is wrong or that there's nothing they can do due to the lack of CEL illumination. I don't think I can even file a lemon law claim, since they refuse to make any repair attempt. I'm at my wits end with this new car. I've also been experiencing occasional transmission slipping between shifts and there's been a persistent creaking noise from the front end when turning sharply. The dealership service manager told me I bought a cheap car so I shouldn't expect so much.
I have a 2019 Elantra Sport Turbo Manual and My car has had nothing but issues. - Cold starts are very rough, when start car misfires like it wants to shut off and then once it gets to normal temp running conditions it idle fine but you can hear misfires from exhaust. - The Manual Gears are Kinda Rough. - car has too much wheel hop - top end on this car sucks and get sluggish - car has Spark, Fuel or Ecu Issues i feel like these cars have so much safety Softwares on the ecu that it makes car feel very sluggish, weak, and give nothing but performance problems. I love the style of my car but Hate how it Runs. also my brake pedal shakes none stop even at while car ain't moving at all.
I have a 2018 elantra and had 2 coils blow on cylinders 1 and 2 around 39,000. Apparently the oil manufacturer of coils had defective products and there quality was no good. Now Hyundai has switch manufacturers they’re using Delphi coils now. I now have 48,000 and car runs fine. I can tell you that fixing coils is extremely easy and there relatively cheap parts. If your going through coils that often than you definatley have some internal engine problems around your spark plugs such as spark plug wires etc. the first time my coils went bad I noticed a burning rubber smelll at times when driving my coils actually melted partially at the bottom. These fault coils were the culprit and couldn’t handle the amount of voltage coming in. Definatley learn how to change coils as it is super easy and clearly will be on your maintenance list over time with Hyundai products.
Hyundai bought my car back last week after 5 repair attempts. Like I said previously, the dealer will not advise you to contact corporate because they get reimbursed for all these repairs. If you are having issues and your dealer claims they can’t fix it, call corporate so at least there’s a record of it in case you need to file a lawsuit. Apparently my car was going to straight to auction, so I feel sorry for the poor soul that ends up with it. It’s actually illegal to sell a lemon in CA so maybe there’s some sort of loophole. Anyway, I took that money and went straight to Nissan and bought a Rogue. Good luck to y’all
Hey everyone, I'm a owner of a 2018 Hyundai Elantra that I purchased this year 1/4/2020. I've experience my engine light coming on and car shaking like it wanted to cut off yesterday. So I took it to Hyundai dealership today and I was told that it was my ignition coil cylinder. I got that replace along with a recall done as well. The Recall was a updated software. So we'll see if this replace ignition coil cylinder will be my last problem for awhile.
In November, at 12,800 miles, I had an ignition coil replaced. This morning, went to start my car and it wouldn’t over, like a drained battery. Battery, engine, and oil lights all came on, then just battery. I take it to the high way every couple weeks and run it 45 minutes or so since I’m not driving much during lockdown, so I don’t think it’s a battery issue. On my third try, it finally turned over, but did that rough shaking for a few minutes. The CEL never stayed on this time, though (it did in November) Dropped it at dealer. We’ll see what they say. It has just over 15,000 miles right now.
Am in Canada. We also are having engine coil problems on our 2017 Elantra. This will be the second repair within a month.
I have a 2017 Elantra SE, about 85k miles. I bought it brand new and noticed it losing power, stuttering, shaking about 2 years later. I put a good amount of money into regular maintenance, oil, spark plugs, brakes, rotors, new battery, filters, new coils. To have a brand new car and start it up and it shakes and sputters and starts dying in the middle of the road is ridiculous. But the check engine light came on once and when I shut the car off and went to read it, the car started up fine and I didnt know what almost caused my car to die and sputter so badly. Now reading this page and seeing that I'm not the only one having this issue with my car is encouraging but also seems like it's going to be a crappy money pit. Even if they recalled it the elantras are shit for 2018 and 2019 it seems for the same problem.
Sorry, also, my display would freeze when I'd turn the car on. This started to happen about.....1 year into buying the car. It happened twice. I turned the car on and the display was frozen and the only way to fix it was to shut the car off and turn it back on. Weird, but for a brand new car it's scary bc it's like ok is there a bigger problem?
2017 Elantra owner here, same story. Last year, I started having issues where the CEL came on and the car would shake/stutter, especially at speeds over 55mph. Took it to the dealer, but of course by the time I got there, the CEL was off. They checked it and couldn't find anything. Went to pick it up and on my way home, the CEL came back on and the stuttering started. I drove straight back to the dealer and didn't shut it off until they could see it. They ended up keeping it for two days and couldn't diagnose a damn thing. They were able to pull a pending code of a misfire in cylinder 1, but couldn't diagnose a problem. They did swap the coil from cylinder 1 to cylinder 2 to see if the problem would occur there. I've had a few stutters since then, but nothing major until a few days ago, when I was leaving a carwash and the same old thing happened. This time, the light stayed on after repeatedly stopping and restarting my engine. Took it to Autozone and they were able to pull a code reading misfire on cylinder 2. I have an appointment with the dealer this Friday, and of course I just drove my car today and the CEL light is off again. I'm going to keep my appointment and demand they replace the coil pack. The real fun part is that when I first took it in for this issue, I was under 60k miles, so within warranty, but now I'm at about 66k. But if they think I'm going to pay for this, they have another thing coming.
Just bought 2018 Elantra one week ago had to take it back to dealership as engine light was coming on yesterday. Now at dealership it’s the engine coil. Hoping I don’t experience more issues with this car cause I wil be pissed if from what I am reading I start to have repetitive problems
I have a 2017 Hyundai Elantra as well. I leased it for two years, then changed to buying the car. Just after that the first coil issue occured. Same thing, car trying to stall out and shuddering. This week, I was at the dealership Thursday morning after it happened again Wednesday night. Then I was back this afternoon (Monday) when another one went. Now, a few hours later, the same problem again. Back I go tomorrow. First new car I ever bought.
these cars are fucked up
It makes no sense to me why dealerships would replace 1 ignition coil at at time. That seems ridiculous. Thankfully, my dealership here in Nashville, seems like they have their stuff together. They replaced all 4 at once and haven’t had the issue reappear *Knock on wood*
Same issue here. 2017 Elantra. Car was shuddering and CEL light would turn on and off. I bought a bluetooth code reader and it says the problem was misfire on cylinder 1. Took it to dealership and they replaced the ignition coil on cylinder 1. Problem is now reoccurring and my reader says code is misfire on cylinder 2 but the dealership says there are no codes in the history and they can't get the car to repeat the problem on their test drives so they won't replace the other coils. I'm never buying another Hyundai again.
I posted above, all cock-sure that I was going to get my issue fixed and make Hyundai corporate pay for it. I made that post about a month ago. I've had my car back to the dealier three times since then, and they still have yet to do anything. Last time I took it in, they were FINALLY able to make a recommendation of replacing plugs and coils, but now I'm fighting to get corporate to cover it, because I'm a few thousand miles outside of the 60k bumper-to-bumper warranty. Even though the issue started when I was in warranty. The latest is that, even though all along I had been told that what they needed was for the mechanic to diagnose the problem, and one finally has, now corporate wants me to bring the car back to the dealer so they can take pictures. Of what? The ignition coils? The number of hoops they are making me jump through just to try to get them to fix what is apparently a known issue is nothing short of maddening. I will absolutely never buy another Hyundai, and my whole family (all of whom currently own Hyundais) now feels the same. They've lost four customers over this, just from my family.
I’m having the same issue with a 2017 Elantra. It seem to stay in shop. It’s shakes like the engine is going to blow. I keep buying coils and spark plug. Trying it one more time and get 4 new coils , then I’m good on this car. It’s so frustrating !!
I'm having the same issue with the car chugging and feeling like it's going to die. My mechanic moved the coil to another cylinder to see if he can get another miss fire but the car is driving as usual. Mine is a 2017 with about 32k miles. Does the 6year/60k mile warranty from the hyundai which covers coils and spark plugs?
2017 hyundai . 67,256 miles. Shuddering started faintly well before 60,000 mi warranty was up. Reported this to the dealer , no code no diagnosis . They said they would put it in the file for future reference in case it happened again after 60,000. Well here we are. CEL finally came on last week. Misfire cylinder 1. Replaced that spark plug July 31. Two days later , shuddering again , not as bad as before maybe. Today, Aug 4 , shuddering harder ,not as as hard as before spark plug replacement last Friday. Replaced other three plugs today. Within fifteen minutes it's shuddering harder than ever before. CEL come on , goes off ,comes on, off. Then it's only on when the gas is pressed. Parked at AutoZone. CEL now stays on in park..Code reader says misfire C1 again. Try to order coil packs. Lo and behold it's a dealer direct item ,I can't buy . CEL went off again. Now what ?I'm convinced this is an issue that needs a recall after reading this thread. I didn't see this before but after searching 2017 Elantra shuddering again after new spark plugs I found this thread. Good to know it's not just me but this is bs !

Sam, check online for the ignition coils. Rock Auto, Parts Geek, etc. I was able to find them. Easy DIY and not terribly expensive if you shop around. I'm fully expecting to have to do this repair myself out of pocket in the future. My 2018 Elantra never feels like it's running 100%.
Thank you . I just ordered it from Napa, pick it up tomorrow! $94
Sam how is your car doing?
OneMadWoman answered 4 years ago
Just bought my car in today for the same problems. Shaking really bad when I would start my car and idling very roughly. Only 63,000 miles. Was told there is a misfire on cylinder 1. This is ridiculous, my warranty expired 7/13/2020. And I'm just outside the 60,000 mile warranty as well. This pisses me off so much!! Anyone know what kind of bill I can be expecting to fix this???
@OneMadWoman they are really easy to replace yourself. Just order them online and watch a YouTube video and you’ll be good to go.
@OneMadWoman, I would tell them you want corporate to pay for it. If they give you a hard time, contact corporate directly. I finally got them to replace all four of my coils and spark plugs when I was 7k miles outside of warranty. Took a lot of back and forth, but persistence paid off.

2020 Hyundai Elantra purchased brand new 2wks ago. As of today, has 860 miles on it. While driving to work yesterday, I noticed the car shaking a bit. It only lasted 30sec, so I didn't think much of it and ignored it. This morning on my way to work again I hit heavy traffic and had to come to a complete stop at which point the car completely died in the middle of the busy highway and the battery light came on. Super stressed out, I called the Hyundai road side assistance and they towed the car to the dealership. The car service people at the dealership said it was faulty coils and they replaced all four of them. Hopefully, the issue is solved, but judging from the comments here, it may not be...

2017 Elantra at 50K miles check engine light on. Misfire cylinder 3. Changed ignition coils. Autozone suggested changing all 4 of them which cost $200 for parts. But the car is under warranty. Got it fixed at dealer.

I bought a 2017 Hyundai Elantra Value edition in September 2021. It was used with 29000 on it and now has 56,000 miles since the initial purchased date of the vehicle I have went back 3x for the coil popping off whatever nth # coil. The first time I got it serviced was at Brakes Plus who was able to tell me why it was happening within a month of getting this costly repair done (I spent $600 getting it fixed) I was back at the Hyundai dealership getting it fixed. They told me at first it was notification within the car that was never shut off and sent me on my way within an hour of leaving the dealership I had to make another appointment because my vehicle began to shake, I couldn’t accelerate and sometimes I would go to turn and my vehicle would stall. After two days they were able to tell the same thing Brakes Plus told me and that it indeed fell under warranty. They also stated that Brakes Plus replaced the coil with a faulty part (with no evidence). I see that it is a common thing for a coil on a specific cylinder to pop off every 3,000-6,000 miles. At the most inconvenient times of our lives may I just add. I wonder why Hyundai hasn’t done a recall or sent out a safety message about this since so many Hyundai Elantra 2017 models are constantly going through this. I just called the dealership to get it serviced and they said once I drop my car off from the serviced date it will take 3-4 days before its looked at. She proceeded to tell me to get rental but not through Hyundai but through a different company. She mentioned too that I am not to drive my vehicle because of how unsafe it will be if I were going 70mph on the interstate and my vehicle stalled since that is a common thing to happen with the coil popping off. All I can say is do your extensive research before buying a car!!
Hello, Well I have news for you... It's not just 2017 + Elantras. Mine is 2012 Limited Edition. Got it just a few months ago after my accident. I have the same problem as all of you. First it was light jerking ( when in reverse or idling) then it got worse. Then one day it started shaking and it turned off. It was back on and so was the check engine light. Since then, it's been worse daily. It now jerks and shakes all the time even when I'm driving. I have replaced spark plugs and have just ordered the coils. Next will be crankshaft sensor and if that fails then throttle speed sensor. It's worse with the AC on and when idling. Any thoughts? Best of luck to everyone, Mia Ps the codes so far have been 0303,0304, p3040

Isn't someone trying to make this a recall issue? We've all been duped by Hyundai. Two coils and all spark plugs replaced so far. Now I sense another one is coming.

I have 45000 miles on my 2017 Elantra and am having the 4th could replaced today. This has been a regular thing for about 4 years. I hope today’s repair is an end to the problem.
Had one replaced around 12K miles. Just had to have a second one and all four spark plugs replaced at 44,500 miles.

I replaced coil number 3 in July 2023 and the new coil was faulty. Had to exchange for another and after 6 months same coil had to be replaced. Fortunately I have a friend who changed it for me and it looks very easy. and it didn't cost me too much So sorry to hear everyone's coil issues. I sure hope Hyundai solves this problem for future owners. Other than this issue I really love my car!
