can the shark fin antenna go bad

Anything can go bad. Something to try though is to fish under your dash and find the antennae lead/cable (probably a fat one like a co ax cable) and follow it to to where there is a connector. On some radios it plugs directly into the radio case, with others its a short ways away. If its accessible, try unplugging and replugging it a few times to burnish the connection. Time was that external cable coming into the vehicle would build up oxidation in THAT connector. Also, if the cable is hanging down, someone/something may have snagged it accidentally and partly unplugged it.
