Question type: Car Customization

I need to install a reverse camera system in a 2017 Chevy Express van.  I
am using a rear view safety system.  I am supposed to tie into the ignition
wire, and also to the wire for power to the reverse lights when the van is
put in reverse so that the system is only powered when going in reverse.
The display has a relatively short cable that goes from the display to the
power box, which dictates that I keep the box under the dash  near the
steering column.

What they probably mean is tie into a power source that is on when the ignition is on and then tie the other wire into the backup light wire. If the wires are too short you can always extend them.

You correctly discerned what I was asking. However, extending the wires only helps if I know where to extend them to. Ok so I can find the wire in the taillights for switching, but I still don't know about locating the ignition wire. Or a wire that has power when ignition is on.

The green wire on my backup light worked for my reverse camera. I'm still working on the other answer myself. I have the dash cam and GPS that I would like to run only when the ignition is on. My cig lighters are always powered.
