I have the S trim, no inside liftgate release and I don't think any trims have one. You must open the liftgate manually, there is no hands-free option or power liftgate option.

Yes there is. You have to have your key. On the inside of the hatch toward the bottom in the middle this is a small (~2 inches long) opening. Open your key and inset the key completely on the far end and slide in the opposite direction until it clicks and the hatch should open.

Guru3M9PD I heard the click too but then nothing happened so at first thought it was broken too. Its kind of a weird motion but you have to physically push the tailgate open while also holding the key in said position (slid to the side to release the lever). I guess its good that if you're locked in your trunk with your keys you'll be able to get out...? (Whoever thought this was a good idea at VW was obviously a kidnapper who didn't want people escaping his trunk)
