Mileage Change on speedometer

Question type: General

How is it possible for a garage to change the mileage on a vehicle by 100,000
miles when they are working on the transmission?  When the car was dropped
off, it had 143,000 miles on it.  when we went to pick it up, the speedometer
read (and the service man made a point of saying that we were paying so much
for a car with very high miles) 246,000.  How can this happen?
