can a 1998 626 engine be put in a 2001 626 engine, ls model 2.0 4 cylinder?

The 1998 626 and the 2001 626 use the same engine and have the same body so theoretically you would be able to switch the engines. I would send a quick email or call to a Mazda dealer just to be sure.

I think the engine can be used in your 2001 626, because the 626 did not go through any major changes from 1998 to 2001. I would double check with Mazda. Go to: http://www.mazdausa.com/MusaWeb/emailMazda.action to email them and ask them any other questions you might have.
the 98 626 head had and external crank sensor and the 2001 has an internal or so I have noticed with the head that I bought from an 98 to replace my 2001, good luck hope this helps
