Why did my 2001 just stop while driving it with no warning? The tow man said it was the starter because it would crank but not turn over.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The car gave no warning. No lights came on our
anything...I have heard so many hypothesis on
what may be the problem. I've been told to just
crush it and get another car. Problem is I'm on a
fixed income and don't want a car payment.

The first thing to have tested is the alternator if it stops charging vehicle will shut down while driving.

The alternator was replaced about a year ago...would it go out that quickly? It was brand new brought from Napa...at least that's what the shop told me...

If the car has high miles and is in poor condition it would probably be cheaper to junk it but that is a judgement call only you can make. I would pay a mechanic for a couple of hours of labor to diagnose the problem before deciding what to do.

If the engine turns over but won't start then it is NOT the starter but it could be either the fuel system or a lack of spark or something major like a mechanical failure.
