I didn't find anything about the "S". I did find mention of a "ES" model - "The rare North American ES model came with the Miata's 1.8-liter twin-cam engine (though the internals were not the same), 4-wheel disc brakes, and dual stabilizer bars. The same car went on sale in Australia in second half of 1994. with fully featured BP-ZE engine. The Protegé became a "compact car" for the 1995 model year in North America."

I'm thinking you mean Prote'ge' 5... the hatchback version of the Protege sedan? The "5" is a bit stylized and might be mistaken for an "S."

In Canada they sold the 1994 Protege (JM1BG) body style as the 1995 Protege S. In the US there was only the new model, in Canada they sold the new model as the DX,LX,ES and the old model as the S. What I need to know was it the DOHC or SOHC engine.
