2004 Grand Marquis problems

Asked by Jaren Dec 11, 2018 at 06:54 PM about the 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

It looks like I could have a number of multiple
things wrong with this vehicle. I came to work this
morning to a running 2004 Grand marquis that the
new guy put a fuel pump into the day prior to
this(on my day off) and was told the headlights
wouldn't turn on and asked if I could fix it. I
checked it out and sure enough every light works
except for headlights, turn signals(relay clicks
once and light stays on with no flash), and the high
beam indicator light is steady on but dim. The
senior mechanic around the shop(my dad) says,
"Change the multi functioning switch for the turn
signals and it will fix the problem. I already got one
on the way." Didnt ask questions, I just did it. Gave
it a try. Still all the same problems. Except now I
find out the wiper motor is weak. Doesn't concern
me I'm just fixing it to sell it. Nonetheless, I go into
doing some research of my own on the problem
and learned from a post on this sight that the
LCM(light control module) is the problem and ford
will fix it. So I'm on the phone with ford and they
tell me they can fix it for free because of a recall.
Meanwhile my dad gets in the car, starts it up and
let's it run, a minute or two goes by and then the
car dies on it's own. He starts it back up and it
sputters as if it ran out of fuel but the guage says
1/4 tank. We pour some fuel in it and still acts like
its put of fuel. My dad is still behind the wheel as
and he points out that the ignition switch is acting
up. If he applies slight pressure towards the start
position of the ignition but not to the point its
engaging the starter, it will continue to run. He says
"replace that ignition switch under the steering
column and I can almost guarantee it will fix the
problems with the light and everything" I dont ask
questions, I just do it. Go to turn key and still no
headlight but the big problem now is that when I
turn the key all the way to start the car, it doesn't
crank and all the little dash lights and stereo all
lose power when the key in the start position of the
ignition also. Now I'm afraid to fix another problem
and end up with more again. so I'm looking for
some help from you guys. Please give me some
help in this. It's been a long day

Adjust the switch loosen 2 screws and pull the switch toward the wheel. I would double check the fuel pump, can you hear it run for 3-10 seconds each time the switch is turned on? Is it pumping fuel you need 45 lbs. I would replace the headlights make sure of the number don't trust the one on the bulb it could be wrong. So do the switch first it might fix everything else. I hope this helps take care

LCM problems are the subject of a recall. Ford will modify the LCM circuit with a replacement part free of charge. The other problems? Sounds like you need to keep the wannabe mechanics away from your vehicle.
