Transmission swap

Asked by GuruV8GQY Sep 05, 2018 at 02:10 PM about the 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My merc grand marquis 2003 is an automatic. I
believe it's a 5.4L. Anyway, it started slipping so I
asked around. Someone said I could probably find
a mustang trans out of a mod motor for a couple
hundred bucks and he'd help me swap em. I didn't
wanna sound stupid so I pretended to understand
what the hell he was talking about. I've been trying
to find this mod motor mustang online for an hour
now. Does my advisor know what he's talking
about? Is this possible, this swap he's having me
do?

Well first off your car has a 4.6 liter SOHC V-8 and not a 5.4. The engines are very similar, but different. A 4R70w transmission from a 2003 or earlier Mustang with the same engine might fit and work well. Later than 2003, the transmissions are very similar, but are more computer controlled and they would not be a direct bolt in fire it up and go swap. The best course of action is to find a transmission out of a 2003 Crown Vic or Mercury Grand Marquis or have yours repaired.
