Anti freeze smell
Asked by Dave Mar 09, 2017 at 01:22 PM about the 2002 Mercury Grand Marquis
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I bought a 2002 grand marquis. The guy I
bought it from said he had just replaced
the water pump and that I would smell anti
freeze burning off. I have been driving it
about a week now about 300 miles. The
smell is stilll pretty strong. Is this normal?

The coolant level is ok. I am going to have it looked at. But is it something I should be really worried about until then?
I would also check for a small leak at the heater core.
I do only smell it when I turn the heat or defrost on
Check for a damp spot in the carpet on the right side under the dash.
this may sound BAD --but it works GREAT ... for radiator & heater core leaks ... corse ground black peper 1 large spoon full in radiator while engine is cold --- drive normaly peper will travel to leak fill hole & swell up --- and last months
FOR how would I figure out where the leak is in the heater core and what would you use to fill the leak?
As a stop gap you can use Alumaseal but the bad news is a leaking heater core must be replaced which is a lot of trouble and expense.
Did the seller tell you a BS story so he could sell you a problem car?
I really don't think so he's actually a good guy and he's a dealer. I also hit a damn deer the other day so that could be something to do with it
The deer actually hit me on the drivers side. Not much damage that I can see. Small dent, cracked lens near the head light and took the mirror off
Could having too much anti freeze cause the smell? It's filled right up over the fill line
I would hit the dealer up for a new heater core. If he is a good guy he should cover some if not all of the cost. The minor deer damage is irrelevant in my opinion.
Remind him that he told you the story about the anti-freeze smell.
Ok thanks. I'm taking it to my buddy who is an awesome mechanic tomorrow anyway he will figure out where the leak is for me and I'll go from there. Thanks for the help
