A/C goes out and service engine light comes on

I have a 2002 Mercury sable. This evening I was
driving and the Windows got a little foggy so I
switched from air to hear to get it to go away. At
first it wasn't really blowing very hot. But got them
defrosted anyway. Happens again, I go to defrost..
Heats up fine but then I switch back to a/c and it
now blows only hot air. I stopped at the gas station
near my house about 45 mins after the air situation
began and when I turned my car back on, the check
engine light stayed on. Any idea what could be the
issue?
