After replacing the water pump my 1997
Mercury Mountaineer died in flight and won't
start it did not overheat

If the cooling system functioned normally after the water pump swap, you need to look elsewhere for this issue. Were there any wire connectors you had to remove to do the pump swap? I would start there. Possibly a connector or sensor popped loose when you were driving.
