Tow 2018 MX 5 auto trans behind motorhome

Asked by Suzanne Jan 19, 2020 at 07:48 AM about the 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata

Question type: General

We have a 2018 MX-5 and just purchased a Class C motorhome.  I have found
so many different opinions on towing the Miata I am confused.

What is the best way to tow this car?  Flat tow...trailer tow...dolly tow?  If trailer
does anyone know where the trailer should be purchased and what size and or
type?

Thanks for any help.

I have a 2016 Mazda Miata and I am thinking about towing it behind my class C motorhome (Winnebago / Ford E-450). The owner manual says "The transmission is not designed for towing this vehicle on all 4 wheels." But I see people doing it and they sell baseplate kits for the '16 Miata. Go figure. Anybody have an ND as a toad? How did you get around the transmission issue? What base plate did you go with? What tow bars are you using? And what braking system do you use? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Personally, I believe the very best way to tow the MX-5 Miata or ANY Rear Wheel Drive Sportcar is on a flat bed trailer / tow. Obviously, you shouldn't tow it with the rear wheels on the ground and towing it with front wheels on the ground is a huge risk of damage to the front end of the car (pot holes. bumps in the road, or any uneven road surface). Why even take chances?
