The check engine soon light came on and then I noticed the car temp gauge was warmer than usual even going into the red area.

I agree with thermostat. Something to think about though is your water pump. If you are around 100000 miles with original pump it's time to consider changing it out.

its is the termostat for shure, but I hope you dident stay to long in the red sone. Then you might havee gotten some serious damages to the enginee
