Mitsubishi Galant 2001 timing.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

How do you tell if the valves are messed up so you can't fix the timing? I was having overheating issues so I replaced the radiator, water pump, thermostat, and engine temp sensor. When I changed the water pump out I saw that the balance shaft belt was in 3 pieces...I put a new one on and got the timing marks all right and pointing at the correct notches. Not sure how to tell if I was at TDC on the compression or exhaust stroke...Can trying to start it without being all correct mess it up too much? I am not sure if I passed a point of no return on getting the timing right or if it has messed up the valves.

Ok, so I am 99% sure the timing is correct. Now though it won't stay running at idle. I can hold it at about 2000 rpms and it sounds fine, but if I let it fall to 1500 it just dies quickly. I think it is the plug wires. We may have messed them up when I took off the valve cover to get a look in there trying to find TDC. What do you think?

Ok, so I have no compression in the 3 cylinder and reduced in the 1 cylinder...seems like my oil pump failed me and messed up my motor. So, its new car or new motor time.
