on the title model would say sl.. i have a 95 sl
you could always look up the vin number aswell.. call your local mitsu dealer they can provide the answer
sl has leather seats, base cloth, and vr-4 is awd and a 3.5tt. or thats at least what i know
Well I found a thing online that said the sohc is the base the dohc is the sl and the vr4, well everyone knows that one lol
That is also true, but some people put the dohc heads on the base.
yes people do do that but having leather seats in the sl is an option that you can add to it
this is the dohc, if someone were to switch it you could obviously tell it wasnt suppose to be there
Base is SOHC (161 HP) while SL is DOHC engine (222 HP). It is generally written on the engine cover, and you can usually tell the difference between a dual overhead cam and a single overhead cam. Also, there is generally a badge on the rear of the car (SL), however, some cars are debadged, so you can't always be sure. Call the dealer with your vin to be sure.
I would not switch engines. These cars are pretty old, and unless the body is flawless, it is not worth it. And if the body is flawless, why would there be something wrong with the engine? Also, Not sure on the gearing of the transmission if it would be the same on the base and SL. It is certainly different on base and VR4. I had both cars. The clutch might need to be upgraded to handle the extra HP, so there goes another few hundred. Just byuy a VR4. I sold my 95 VR4, 93K miles for $10K a few months ago, mint condition, with boost controller, and summer and winter tires. Good luck.
Well I'm not switching engines I'm just making sure I have the sl not the base model
LOL so of you need to do lil more research. The base and the SL had the same motor in the first and second gens, it wasn't until the third ten in 97 that the base went to the SOHC. But just so you know all the motors and all the trannies are the same, just with diff options. The VR4 has same tranny as the base just with a extra gear added. Best test is the vin number, the base has an "H".
the previous text before minew is correct/ I restore these vehicles. The previous text before mie is correct/ I restore these vehicles. The base has cloth seats & no sunroof. Again first & second gen. 91-96 all have DOHC, some 97-99 come with both SOHC & DOHc. All DOHC MOTORS HAVE THE ;LETTER J AS THE EIGHTH NUMBER. THE SOHC 97-99 HAVE THE LETTER H AS THE 8TH NUMBER. THE LETTER J AS THE EIGHTH NUMBER. THE SOHC 97-99 HAVE THE LETTER H AS THE 8TH NUMBER, Both DOHC & SOHC can be equipped with a DOHC any year, any model however the 4rd generation are the only ones that can be equipped with a SOHC, Also some SL models, some come with sunroofs, & all SL models have radio controls on the steering wheel & led Climate control, no knobs to control; emp.Base models come with cloth seats. Leather seats are SL & VR4. Easiest way to tell what model you jhave is to look av 8th number of the VIN, look for seats being cloth or weather, check for DOHC or SOHC. look for temperature control, if sunroof. its a combination of these parts that determine what model you have. Fact, dohc with leather seats, no digital climate or radio controls is a basic. SL has radio controls on the wheel digital climate controls, leather seats & so on.
How to tell the difference if the car has TT or not by just basically looking at the engine bay? I saw an AD and I would like to know if it has a TT or not. It does not indicate anything on the AD but just "1992 Mitsubishi GTO 3000GT VR-4". This the engine bay.
The base model means "basic" basic seats, cloth, audio system lso base or vbasic, no audio controls on steering wheel. SL models originally have leather seats, audio controls on steering wheel z& some with sunroof. Also SL & VR4,some have sun- roof, A base model will never have a factory sunroof. The base model will never come with factory audio controls on steering wheel. As for the engines depending on the year. The DOHC can be found in both the base model & SL model The VR4 is an entirely different design. Turbo, all leather, audio controls on steering wheel, active aero design, 4WD. different transmission with transfer case, bigger, heavier & totally different plates, springs ect. You need all this information to find which model you have, year, engine size, clorth or leather interior, audio controls, sunroof to self determine which model tyou asking abouy. I have owned several of every model. 1st, 2nd & 3rd generation, standard & automotive ect.. I've been building these vehicles for 30+ years. If you find one in disrepair, unless your familiar with where to get parts, how or where to fix them stay away. If it is in good condition , go for it, I've had more than one of each model go over 300.000 miles. Miscellaneous Things are guaranteed to stop working due to poor workmanship. Mitsubishi is known for great engines, not for supporting parts. The window regulators will stop working for sure, timing belts will slip or break, transmissions, automatic overdrive will stop working, None of these regular or in the 3000Gt normal faults should stop you from buying these cars. Any of the above are easy fixes & if you shop around you won't have any trouble finding parts at reasonable prices. To sum up these cars: in WWii Mitsubishi made the Japanese Zero. They outraced, outmaneuvered the U.S. fighter jets for awhile until we built better engines, however the parts surrounding the Zero planes where garbage. They were made out of the cheapest material available at the time, They were very light, but something always broke on their planes or they could be shot out of the sky with just one bullet. The same is true in a manner of speaking except a little opposite, These cars are very heavy, can stand a severe accident with minimal damage to the body but everything else would be shot. Great cars if & when they work. actually my favorite, but if they dont work & you dont know how to fix them buy a Honda, you'll be better off .

I have the 1998 3000gt and I was confused about what model I have because it has leather interior but it has an H in the vin number. And there is no indication that it has a DOHC in the engine bay. So I would assume it is a base model just with leather seats
