Hi Sheila. You are going to need someone who knows the beast well. If you are replacing it the source for your new part should be willing to help you out with procedure. Otherwise it's been my experience that a call to one of the guys who works on Vettes for love and fun will usually return more information than you have a right to hope for. If you are mid-west call Corvette Central at 800.345.4122 and see if you can get someone to talk ... In the Southwest call Dunshee's Corvette Restoration at 602.938.8895 ... or Quanta Restoration at 800.235.8788. Or you can find your self a repair manual for your vintage Vette. Here's a CD-ROM version on amazon (http://www.amazon.com/1949-1954-Chevrolet-1953-1954-Corvette-Manuals/dp/B000KIVP4M/sr=8-1/qid=1172540935/ref=sr_1_1/103-9186279-2615045?ie=UTF8&s=automotive) . It sounds like something you are going to want to have to take care of your baby. Good luck!
