Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I just got a call from the mechanic and he said that my 1996 Pathfinder has too much sludge inside the engine and its better if I get rid of it.  I heard some people talking about 5W-40 Shell Rotella Type III diesel engine oil will do a good job cleaning out the sludge.  Is that real?

I'd wager you're using Penzoil. It's famous for waxy sludge [ look inside your oil fill cap ]. Dump it & use Quaker State & you should notice a big difference. Dunno about Shell

I would not pour Quaker State into ANYTHING! Use Castrol! You should consider flushing the engine if there's sludge built up inside. Find a good mechanic and discuss having it flushed if you don't wish to do it yourself.
