2004 grand am a.c. compressor rattles w\ air on. what would cause this?

The compressor itself maybe going bad. From what I understand the seals inside the compressor go bad over time.

Yah the bearings themselves within the unit. When the compressor clutch is not engaged the pully spins freely on the clutch bearings, when the clutch engages it would then rotate the compressor shaft. I would change or replace soon you don't want the compressor to sieze..

Sometimes you can get away with it, but if it is the bearings and they do sieze you have a 50/50 shot of blowing the clutch or breaking the belt.
