Power Steering Issues

Asked by MdM42 May 23, 2017 at 04:37 PM about the 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2004 Grand Prix GT- The steering wheel starts to be hard to maneuver like its going to lock. The warning lights for ABS and Brake System and Wheel Traction lights up. I been checking the power steering fluid and brake fluid but it doesn't seem like its a leak because its pretty much filled to the line. Any opinions what could be tighten the steering wheel. Thank you

Sounds like two separate problems. First have the car scanned for codes and see what is causing the ABS, Brake Syst, and Traction Control to light up. Probably is a wheel sensor but getting the scan done will show this. Once that is taken care of, look for other codes for a clue to your steering issue but there will likely be nothing. Could be that your power steering pump is failing since you say that the fluid level is OK. Also, check for a loose serpentine belt.

Worn wheel bearings and axle shafts will mess with the ABS and cause thsteering to do strange things at low speeds. I've had that happen on 2 cars. New axles and bearings fixed it.

I would at least find the problem or have it diagnosed by a shop to make sure it’s not a safety issue. Then you can make a decision about whether it’s worth fixing or not.
