trac off abs and brake light

Asked by Misa Oct 06, 2016 at 12:04 PM about the 2003 Pontiac Sunfire

Question type: General

When abs, brake and trac off lights turned on for
my Pontiac Sunfire 2003, it won't change gears
beyond 35 mph, only increases rpm. Does anyone
know what could be the problem?

Check abs wheel sensors, if nothing obvious like a broken wire or sensor, you'll need to have it scanned to find the problem

Sounds like two separate issues. The ABS, brake and trac indicator lights are all related because they all involve the braking system of the car. As Irodri911 said, it is probably a sensor that has gone bad. The gear issue is most likely a trans issue but we need more info to help diagnose. Does the car increase speed as the RPM's increase or does it stay at 35 and the RPM's keep rising? If the brake issue is holding the car back, this may be why your speed is not increasing. Have the brake issue fixed first and then see if the shifting issue goes away.

Have the cars diagnostics scanned and see what codes show up. A bad sensor will likely trigger a code that can be used to diagnose. An auto store or shop can easily do this for you for free.

You can only do a visual inspection, you'll have to get it scanned to actually see if they're working or not

I replace the brakes, calipers and rear wheel cylinders with new wheel sensors check all brake line for leaks. brake light comes on intermittently. I think it was the emergency brake not disengaging but I tested it and it working properly.
