pontiac vibe won't turn on unless we pump the brakes a few times then it will start, sometimes only

The brakes are not part of the starting circuit. The "brake pedal position switch (or sensor)" would prevent car from shifting unless brakes are applied. It's possible a fault lies with neutral safety switch that is being affected by the BPP. The neutral safety switch prevents a car from starting unless transmission is in park or neutral. Next time try making certain gear selector is fully in park when trying to start, if it feels loose or sloppy, the neutral safety switch is doing it's job and preventing car from starting, pumping the brake may be vibrating vehicle and nudging shifter around just enough to allow it to start, or possible electrical fault lies between BPP and NSS.
