Is it normal to get a warning alarm when you exit a 2000 Pontiac Montana?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

We purchased this car as a first time car for a new driver.  After jump starting
the car, I noticed the overhead light was on and turned it off.  I drove the car
for about 20-30 minutes.  The Security light came on, then the low fuel light
came on.  When I stopped for gas the alarm came on when I opened the
door.  I couldn't find a cause but a couple of hours later, the car wouldn't start
again.  Before purchasing a new battery, I would like to know if the exit alarm
is normal or signaling something left on to drain the battery?

Most likely something is going on in the driver's side door. It sounds like the vehicle doesn't know it's been unlocked with the key or key fob. Try this, lock the vehicle using the power lock switch on the door panel. On my 2000 Grand Prix that locks the vehicle but doesn't set the security system. If that doesn't work you need to have your local GM Dealer look at it. There's very little you can do with a security system problem. Hope that helps! Jim
