Car surges and stalls

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
The car started surging and then turned off at a light a couple of weeks ago. The service engine soon light came on as well. Never checked it until last weekend when the car was surging and shut off again and would not start back. After a while, it did start back but continued surging. The code said a MAF sensor, which we replaced and the car started up. It ran for about a mile and shut down again. We have done a tune up and replaced the fuel filter. Still same problem. It will start and surge. When you push on the accelerator, it will try to stall right out. Any suggestions?

you may have a bad MAF...Those symptoms are identical to what mine did and it was the MAF sensor.

We replaced the MAF but that does not mean that we did not get a bad one, unfortunately. We are planning on testing the MAF. We have been leaning toward the Crankshaft position sensor since it has a hard time starting sometimes. However, other times it just starts right up.? Unfortunately, the place it is in the car makes it hard to get to. Will post back as we check those.

We replaced the crankshaft sensor and still the same thing. The car will start and idle for about 4 minutes and then shuts right off. Starts back and runs rough and cuts back out. Going to check the wiring today on the crankshaft sensor now that weather is better (no garage).

Problem solved. We received a defective MAF sensor. Replaced it and running good.

Throttle position sensor if that's not working the replace it with a new one
