Noise while turning

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1998 Grand Prix that makes a
noise when turning. The best way i can
describe the noise is that it sounds slightly
like a whale. kind of a 'whurrrmm' sound
but not a metallic grinding sound or
anything like that. it used to make this
noise only when i made really tight turns.
now the noise seems to occur more
frequently while driving. sitting parked and
turning the wheel is most noticeable. i have
noticed that if i push the accelerator when
turning (even slightly) that the noise will not
happen when driving. also, i can feel
something in the wheel when the noise
occurs. what would cause my car to do
this and how could i fix it? Also a ballpark
price range for parts and installation? And
what do I chance continuing to drive it?

Power steering pump. If it makes the noise when the car is stopped and you turn the wheel, it's the pump. First thing to do is check you have proper power steering fluid level in the pump reservoir. Fill it and keep an eye on it, if it loses fluid check for wetness around the lines to the rack. If it's not low but still making noise the pump may be going bad. If it is in fact bad, replacement cost by a mechanic will be about 250+
