Loud Ticking noise

Asked by Trene Sep 18, 2017 at 08:35 AM about the 1994 Pontiac Bonneville

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My car makes a loud ticking noise like "tick
tick tick tick" over and over while I'm driving.
I don't know if its the engine or not but its
coming from somewhere under the hood. I
can't afford to get my car fixed right now so
how long can I keep driving it before it goes
out on me?

I'd start by checking the oil level and making sure that the ticking noise isn't related to low oil. If it is low add the proper type of oil and recheck for the noise. If the oil level is good then listen for the noise when the vehicle is running to see where it appears to be coming from. That way you can narrow down possible causes, although there is no way to say how long before something fails and leaves the vehicle unusable.
