whats wrong when oil dip stick has smoke comming out of it and oil gage reads hot?

Sounds like you may have a bad head gasket. Check the compression on the cylinders to see if there is one or two low in compression.

Check your oil! Sounds like you're low on oil to me add some!

Is it the oil pressure gauge or the water temp gauge that is reading HOT? Might be 2 different problems.

the oil was overfilled,and the vacume hose had a leak and the idler pully was wabbly those were fixed. I guess its not running hot/ the oil gage was going up. but he said its not anymore because it was overfilled. he said he was checking the pistons tomorrow.

If you have white smoke come out of the exhaust (if you see smoke in the rear view mirror whilst driving) You most likely have a blown head gasket, especially if 1- Your car keeps over heating 2- white smoke out the exhaust and or from under the hood 3- If the oil has a-) water mixed in with it. b-) If you just changed it & it gets dirty really fast. c-) there is ANY metal shavings or water mixed in with the oil (The oil you,a friend, mechanic,etc. puts in your car NEVER has water ,shiny, lumpy or mixed in it. It should stay a yellowish, gold or light brownish translucent (see through) for a while before it gets really dirty, dark or murky) 4- If you have to add oil and or coolant or water daily - couple days. Or you could simply need a new temperature/oil gauge float or gasket/seal, valve or if there is a loose fuse to the dashboard gauges are loose or the wrong one the manual will tell you where to find them & the correct size/color/amp you need. People sometimes use one 5 amps higher or lower just to make them work if they don't have the exact one so they work but not how they should. check to see if the oil cap & dipstick seal tight when closed properly. The Best way to find out for sure what the problem(s) is if you know someone that has a diagnostic code reader tool that will check the codes for you. Otherwise the mechanic shops & the dealerships USUALLY charge a ridiculous amount to hook up the diagnostic tool they connect a wire/plug to your car, some run the car until the motor is warmed up then they rev the engine a little bit then...*POOF* they wait for it to spit out the problem codes.Look them up on the computer or in a manual then they charge you 60.00 -150.00 bucks to tell you whats up with your car (Yeah, NOT really hard, Not much physical movement as you can connect a couple wires together properly the first time, Most just sit in the car & revving the engine while the code reader does the rest. Going through your glove box & other crap "Looking for the lug key" Yeah if a lug key is actually spare change, gum,candy, etc. That you wont notice missing. Lol ;) most don't but some have,do & will. ) A good friend will hook it up & give you the codes & tell you to look them up online or if they have the manuals let you look them up or will do it for ya.

If it’s only smoking when the dipstick is out like when checking the oil you are either low in on oil so it’s gettinf hotter than it should and it’s cooking or you have a 24 year old car with some mileage on it and you’re burning oil the crankcase is getting hot. Just because your oil gets dirty doesn’t mean it’s a bad head gasket your oil shouldn’t stay honey colored for long because it cycles through where’s all the last 24 years of oil has so it picks up residue. Changing oil doesn’t rinse the rings and bearings and and all the valleys the oil pumps through. White smoke doesn’t mean blown head gasket always either it’s usually when your motor is burning oil and that’s only if it’s a lot of white smoke coming from the tail pipe a car doesn’t run right if it has blown head gasket
