Oil temperature gauge keeps dropping to zero and yellow oil can with word "sensor" appears. I assume the oil temperature sender is failing but where is it located on the engine please?

My background is in oil so I know that what I am looking at is an oil temperature gauge on the dashboard (don't know why Audi fitted one --- oil pressure would have been more useful!!) which occasionally falls to zero and the yellow oil can sign plus the word "sensor" lights up. It may just be a connection fault at the oil temperature sender but I need to know where to find the temperature sender on the engine?!!

Oh dear --- It seems that there must be an awful lot of folk asking stupid questions. I trained as a lubrication engineer. The oil is absolutely fine but the engine has a screw in oil temperature sender. I've looked at a picture of the offending part but I don't know where it is located on the engine. At this time of year I don't want to be removing the undertray and hunting around for it, so will someone just tell me where it is fitted PLEASE??

Try this, apparently it is on the bottom of the oil pan ---- http://www.audiforums.com/forum/audi-a6-9/oil-temp-sensor-117698/

Possibly post #5 at the link will solve this for you. Just guessing at your engine size. You do know how to copy and paste?? http://www.audiforums.com/forum/b5-models-69/engine-oil-temp- gauge-sensor-185938/

Oh, sometimes they need a little tough love and some persuasion. Took me 2 minutes to find the information. I do wish the OP good luck with it.

Some 2.7 don't have the sensor above the oil filter those that don't are on the bottom of the oil pan

The engine oil temperature sensor is integrated into the oil level sensor located in the bottom of the oil pan. The engine PRESSURE sensor is above the oil filter (under the ac compressor). The engine coolant temperature sensor is a green and gold cylinder located on the back of the passenger side head. I replaced them all before changing the right sensor... face palm!
