Ideally, turn off car. Keep driving an overheated car and you'll risk permanent damage to motor.

Yes, turn on the heater full blast to open the thermostat all the way and make sure that the air conditioning is off if you are underway, BUT, do NOT put the car in neutral. When you can safely get out of traffic and stop the car, turn off the engine and call the AAA. Don't try and remove the radiator cap until the engine cools, you could burn yourself, let everything cool off.
