Subaru alternator
2003 Subaru Outback
Sedan.A while back I put 4
different alternators in my
Subaru because each one of
them were burning up and I
decided to take it to the
Subaru shop and they put a
Subaru alternator in instead
of ones from a parts store
they told me that if you put a
general parts store alternator
in there it will short out And
after that it ran for quite
some time. Is this true or
false?

Many rebuilt alternators are junk. The rebuilders only replace the bad part and leave all the old parts in place which soon burn out. When buying alternators look for suppliers that replace ALL the working parts.
Absolutely as FOR said! Many years ago I had a 66 Cadillac. I replaced the starter six times in just a few months! After I replaced it with a Delco starter I had no further problems with it! Personally I always go with manufacturer replacement parts, when they're available. Delco for GM, Motorcraft for Ford, etc. Hope that helps!
I learned that lesson the hard way, many, many years ago when my Toyota alternator went out. I bought a Pep Boys replacement and they failed every few weeks for months until I found a better source. If you can find a shop that specializes in rebuilding automotive electrical devices, try them as they may do the best job compared to places that do mass quantities of alternators.
