How do you reset the system and be able to start the car after setting off the alarm by using the key to unlock the door
I accidentally used the key to unlock the car and the alarm sounded... I
quickly closed the door and I think I hit the buttons on the fob....or I re locked
the door manually. I'm really not sure it was so alarming. Now the car will not
start and the fob is not working either. Car Manual is not helping to get it all
reset. Can you help

Is there a number to call the manufacturer of the alarm?

Grasshopper, it's the SUBARU alarm he's most likely referring to. Christ...you're crapping on threads you can't possibly be helpful with again.... Shiatsue: just insert key in ignition and twist three times...alarm will go off. On 4th twist car will start.
Shiatsusue answered 6 years ago
Thanks for reaching out... when the alarm started I closed the door , pushed buttons on the fob and maybe relocked the door... i can’t remember... the alarm stopped . I have tried the 3x and then start on 4th ... no luck. I have locked and tried the fob lock / unlock to try to reset ... no luck... tried unhooking negative terminal to battery / turn switch to on.. retook up battery... no luck. Tried jumping the car no luck... it is dead in the water.
WOW.... there are after market alarms you know....
TheSubaruGuruBoston answered 6 years ago
Again, a deceptively sideways error in logic, Grasshopper. As the questioner didn't mention an aftermarket system, and ALL Subarus have a factory passive system that "alarms" when electronically locked and subsequently is unlocked manually, the first solution is ALWAYS to reset the system with the triple key-twist...aka the valet's special. Please PLEASE stop adding noise to the landscape!
My dads car just ran out of gas when it said it was on 20 miles, so he put in the hazard light and walked to the nearest speedway , when we filled the car back up with 1 Gallon of gas, the car turned back on but the engine wouldn’t start, so we didn’t need jumper cables and the situation didn’t make sense but I jumped online and it said you had to Try to start the car but turning your keys 4 times really fast , my dad did and he heard the engine start a little and then did it 4 times again and we got it to start, who would have thought of that, if you are think ab getting a 2018 Subaru Outback don’t there are better less confusing options.
I need to know if it's possible to bypass the alarm system and Hotwire the car the keys were lost on the job site is mom bought him the car and she lives in Oregon where in Indiana
Subaru can cut a new key to start the car. Take identification and owners card to dealer. They will look up the number and cut a key on the spot. I did this.
TheSubaruGuruBoston answered 6 years ago
Then you take the new key and cycle it fully in the ignition three times and the car will start.
TheSubaruGuruBoston deserves a medal. Picked up my car from the shop. Parked at Walmart. Came back out and it wouldn’t start, security light flashing. Googled this. Found this thread. Turned three times and on the fourth, magic. Not all heroes wear capes.

Thank you all for your help! At the 4th time my car worked!
So when you say turn key do you mean all the way from kill to start. I have a 2012 legacy doing he same thing.
Three cycle trick worked for me, thank you!
This was for a 2002 Subaru Outback SW, 2.5L

We are working on a Subaru that was in an accident. When the accident happened, the horn went on. But now the ignition is dead except the horn blairs when you try to turn it on. We have tried the key trick. Any ideas?

I have a 2002 subaru legacy 2.5l sedan and my starter went bad so I replaced it and after i did it I hooked thr terminals back up and the car would start on its own without the keys in the ignition I replaced the starter again and now as soon as I hook up the terminals all the dash lights come on but won't start at all any help?
John, you should start another thread. That said, there's either a shorted solenoid attached to the starter or a faulty ignition switch, but neither is common.
Terminal has come loose on your battery. Tighten that shit up and give her a start
I think the problem described involved SELF-starting...not intermittent starting. But yeah, the positive terminal can get especially cruddy.
Hey i have a subaru sti 2005 doors won’t unlock with keys and alarm goes on and car want start and key icon blinking any possible way to fix it plea help me
TheSubaruGuruBoston answered 4 years ago
It's telling you to say goodbye; call Uber from now on.
Evening SubiGuru I had just purchased a 2000 2.5rs Car had started when going onto trailer but now won’t start Subaru keyless remote box (Under dash) was partially unplugged plugged it back in still no start Only lights come on dash no crank and key fob doesn’t work
Yes sir just put a new battery in it when the key is turned All lights work on the dash, headlights work, brake lights work ect Just no crank or start, I’ve tried looking for the box with a reset button even talks about after looking for 6 hours yesterday & 4 hours today I haven’t been able to find it All I see a little black box that says sensor on it for the ”Subaru keyless entry system” (plugged in) I’ve tried switching ignition on/off quickly 4 times I’ve tried doing it 10x to reset it still with no luck sadly
Now light won’t stop flashing (dash/exterior) and it wasn’t doing this before hand I think it has something to do with the keyless entry system?
TheSubaruGuruBoston answered 4 years ago
Ok...saw your coincident posts. Clearly the black box is interlocked with your ignition feed. You should be able to remove it and reconnect as necessary. PITA, I know....

I don't use key fob. Key only. This AM, I unlocked my door and alarm went off. Car won't start. I eventually was able to get alarm off but every time I open door, it goes off again. Help?
TheSubaruGuruBoston answered 4 years ago
If you lock the car electronically with the door switches then the system is armed, and will require a fob unlock to pass the security interlock. The only way to lock, unlock and start the car is, if after driving, turn off the key and MANUALLY lock all the doors from the inside, then use the key to lock the driver's door. That way the electronic locks and security stay asleep. Better to get some fobs programmed, eh?
I have a 2010 Outback that I bought a new key for. I was able to program it so the fob works. It unlocks the doors but doesn't start the car. The ignition turns over all the way but I only get a half of a crank. I don't think the interlock recognizes the key. Any suggestions?
The battery is under two years old. The original key works fine and car starts normally. The key lights up on the dash when trying to use the new key.
TheSubaruGuruBoston answered 4 years ago
Yeah. Indeed that key is NOT programmed correctly to the car. Reprogram?

Hey Subaru Guru Second hand 1999 Subaru Forester here. I locked the car with the fob, stepped and broke the fob, now I can only use the key to get in and when I use the key in the ignition the car won’t start and the alarm goes. Trying to get the fob fixed where I am is difficult and costly. I want to use only the manual key but I can’t start the car and the alarm goes until I get out of the car and lock it. Any suggestions? Couldn’t find the button to manually turn off the alarm....
TheSubaruGuruBoston answered 4 years ago
You can find a used fob online. Was yours the teardrop-shaped 3-button one with a small red panic button on the rear? If so, Paypal me $15 and I'll send you one with a new battery. Regardless, turn the manual ignition key three times all the way through lock-to-ignition and on the 4th turn the engine should crank. Ern TSG/B ernest_meunier@msn.com Paypal
2002 outback, aftermarket keyfob. keyfob works, it locks and un locks the doors. If you lock the door it fast beeps like 4 or more times. If you open the door ( unlocked ) it alarms for a long time. I tried the on/off three times and no crank. Open door and it alarms. I'm at a loss what to do next. I disconnected the battery and as soon as I connect it, doesn't work.
I’m having the same problem at the moment
Turns out someone put a aftermarket security module tucked in behind the factory one. Disconnected that and it worked.
@TheSubaruGuruBoston I have a 2016 Outback 2.5l with push to start. The battery was run down after rolling windows down and not turning off. Went to jump start it. Alarm went off. Now remote does nothing. No power to windows/lights/etc. Only the dash lights will come on and car will not crank. Is there an alarm reset?
Battery dead---replace---alarm goes off and will not shut up so quick look on the net found this site and all I can say is sensei aka TheSubaruGuruBostton Thank you 4 turns and happy
Same boat, but nothing seems to work. 97 legacy outback, battery died, umped car and had it running, wife took foot off gas and it died. Had lights flashing, now wont turn over at all. Tried 3 turn trick multiple times with doors open/doors closed. Tried the negative battery terminal trick... frustrated and cant figure this out.
Hi All, I was reading this thread since we have a similar problem. Subaru Tribeca 2012. Went out this morning both key fobs don't work, tried opening the car manually with key. Got in and tried to start but everything is dark on dashboard no lights etc. Opened the hood and disconnected the negative battery connection for 5 min. Nothing? Thanks Rob
@TheSubaruGuruBoston Will be calling AAA for a battery. Will I have an issue with the car fob/alarm having to be reprogrammed etc once the power is replaced?
TheSubaruGuruBoston answered 4 years ago
No. Great Interstate battery deal at COSTCO, by the way.
Haha! Thanks for the Cosco info as well! Thanks. Rob
Battery was my issue as well. Went back through S.G.B. 's posts and thought I had tested my battery properly after jumping. Finally took battery to get tested/charged, got it back and installed... nothing. Couple curse words, possibly a flying socket and a light went off (I know, for most of you the light goes on...) and then.... the 4th turn started the car. Thanks S.B.G.!
I have a subaru wrx sti 2011 and battery dead. Now can’t start but i have a button to start the engine. What can i do to reset the immobilizer? Thanks
I just bought a Subaru outback and someone tryed to replace the stereo and cut the old wires now the alarm is on and the car will not start how can I get it started until I find another plug for radio to put back in
Tried to post, dont see it on here... sorry if doubled. Subby dead on side of the road. Battery is a month old.(posted here a few comments ago). Got flashing parking lights to stop, but 4 turn reset to immobilizer is not working. Dinging when key is put into ignition... no other sounds or signs of life. So frustrated.

Age? Old ones have intermittent alternators that "forget" to turn on and charge batteries. New ones have bad batteries...and some new batteries fail. Jump-start and check alt voltage (should be 14-14.5v). If not ok get a new alternator...they're cheap remanufactured. If a much newer Subie the alt is probably ok, so try another battery. Need more facts here....

2018 Outback won’t start, checked the fuses, replaced battery and nothing. Initially tried to jump it when we connected the cables the horn would go off. The anti theme light was blinking initially also. I don’t have an actual key just the push button so I did the sequence on that and it seemed to clear the anti-theft and the horn stopped honking. Unfortunately it still won’t start. Dealership has the car they said the only thing they have found so far, and have on order, is the keyless computer control unit was bad. Hoping this fixes it but if not do you have any ideas?
TheSubaruGuruBoston answered 4 years ago
Does it crank? Are you sure "new" battery is charged?
SubaruGuruBoston- sorry for not giving enough facts, thank you for your time. I am in a '97 Legacy Outback. I was thinking it wasnt that because I have bells and key fob is lock/unlocking now that its towed home. Ultimately it was the battery last time too, so not sure why I thought it wouldn't be the alternator since it is a new battery. I will attempt to jump now and see what we got.
My '97 will not jump, doesnt turn over or even attempt to do anything but door open ding when key is in ignition. Windows are cracked and won't roll up too. Took battery into autozone where I got it. They tested it and said it was good and had 95% charge. They said i could take the alternator out and bring it in to test, but if the battery has charge does that change what might be the issue? Arghhh

I have a 2009 Outback with 2 key fobs. Both showed signs of dying batteries. Changed them out and they lock/unlock great now. Only one key will start the car though, whereas both worked fine before. The second key now causes the SECURITY light to glow red when I insert the key in the ignition. I reprogrammed the key and got all the beeps and light blinks when expected. It still unlocks/locks great but still gets the red SECURITY light. Tried the 4x ignition trick and no luck. One key continues to work fine and the other can't satisfy the security system. Any guidance?
I'm still at a standstill on my 97 Outback. Seems like immobilizer, but nothing seems to work to reset it. So I am still clueless and without a car. Car wont jump or turnover at all for that matter. Door locks work, but windows dont. Battery has been tested and came back good. I would say starter, but wouldn't it be trying to turnover?
TheSubaruGuruBoston answered 4 years ago
Jimbo: try cutting the battery for an hour and starting over again. Dancing: '96-99 OBs were Subaru's worst cars. Dump it.
I am having a similar problem with my '99 forester...any ideas?
I have 2020 legacy with 1300 miles die on wife. Wouldn’t start, red immobilizer light flashing. Found this thread, the 4 key turn trick worked on 2nd try. Thanks Subaru guru boston! Unfortunately wouldn’t start next day. Towed to dealer and they said “defective battery” and replaced I am not very confident this is the last of my problems on this car. Why would it start at all if battery was defective? Ugh

Subaru Guru please help! My wife's 2010 outback. She lost the keys and has been using a copy key the previous owner gave her. She's used it many times no problems. About 2 weeks ago we replaced the battery. Yesterday the door was left open for for a few hours and my wife thought she had killed the battery. It didn't work because the battery was fully charged. However, her car will not start. when you turn it you hear all of the accessories turn on but nothing when you hit the ignition stage, The key is stuck in the ignition as well. I tried unhooking the neg side of the battery for 10 minutes, Tried the 3 twists got nothing. Having the Subaru dealer make anew key might work except the old one is stuck in the ignition. Ideas???
Subaru Guru, please help! My WRX 2015 will not start. It does not crank. When I turn the key in the ignition all the lights on the dash come on but no sound comes from the engine. when the key is in the ignition the immobiliser light does not come on at all either. I have checked the battery, relays and fuses. Sometimes it starts but 9/10 times It does not. start. Any advice would be appreciated.
I can’t open the door to my 2014 Subaru Outback with either key with built in key fob.
Working on an 18 outback with keyless ignition. Lost keys. I cant get alarm disabled to program new smart key. Any suggestions since I can't turn ignition 4x?? I've tried battery trick. I pulled out kick cylinder and turned lock mechanism with a screwdriver to simulate having the key. Alarm still active. I have a programmer that is supposed to read immo and make new dealer key but cant force ignition or communicate with ecu/bcm while alarm is active....... also subaru dealer activated remote start feature via their programming. It's not really aftermarket but does have it's own fob???? First I've heard of this.... guess this could be part of the issue
TheSubaruGuruBoston answered 4 years ago
You'll probably have to either call a roving indie who has the capability of programming a NEW keyless (Limited/Touring) fob to your car ($300-ish) or tow to Subaru to buy and program one ($400-ish). Subarus ARE a PITA in this area....
Subaru guru what do you think of this? MY15 WRX alarm goes of randomly and won’t stop for 5 minutes and when I can unlock the car with the key and the fob and lock it with both and even start the car and it’s still going throughout this whole time. What could the problem possibly be? Thanks in advance!
@thesubaruguruboston I'm hoping you may be able to help. If I lock my 2004 Legacy with the fob, the alarm beeps 15 times and then goes off. I've checked all doors, windows, hood and trunk to make sure they're closed. The dash doesn't show anything to be open. I can lock with the key which is what I'm having to do for now.
M and I, you'll have to trace an open circuit somewhere. Tedious work sometimes. Good luck. Ern

Similar problem. 2001 Outback. Just got it 2 days ago. Drove it home. Locked the doors. Unlocked with the key. Alarm started going off and key won’t do anything. I eventually just disconnected the battery to get it to stop. I later reconnected and tried the key trick but it did nothing but let my battery die and loss off my neighbors. I do not have the fob. The vehicle belonged to the late husband of the woman I bought it from. She didn’t even know there was a fob. So now she’s looking for it and I’m stuck with a useless car. Suggestions? Could it be because my key is a duplicate and not an actual Subaru key?
Further: you MUST unlock with the fob if you lock the car's doors by using the electric switches. Using the mechanical key in a lock cylinder WILL trigger the alarm. Fortunately your old Subaru uses a separate cheap fob that you can buy used nline for $20 and then reprogram easily following the manual's instructions. If I recall correctly it's the old teardrop- shaped fob.
